First off, let me say that I'm bummed I don't have an image with the drummer,
who's name is either Joe Cruz, Joe Cruiz or Joe Cruise. Hopefully, one day, he will Google his name, find this page and send me an email so I can fix that little shortcoming.
This band existed when I lived in South Florida, so I didn't witness much of it's existence. In fact, I only saw one show and I had to ride on my motorcycle, in the rain, from Fort Lauderdale to Winter Haven, put on dry clothes and continue with my friends Tim Gable and Dennis Hodges to Orlando, while drying my sneakers on the engine block of Tim's car. It was worth the trip, this band was tight. Tiiiiiiiiiight.
DMZ was a 5 piece band that also included the guitar player Dan Pate and the singer Jay Noble. This recording, however, was Doug and Kirk auditioning Joe, as Doug says in the note included in the CD art, and that this was the first time they ever jammed with him. It's really good. Doug adjusted the recording setup twice during the sessions because, as he told me on several occasions, he felt his playing this weekend was "inspired" and I agree with him. The music is incredibly good. Joe, being the new guy and not knowing the songs keeps a very solid line, but the playing of Doug and Kirk really show their time together and their knowledge of where the other is going to go during improvisations. I really love listening to this disc.
A note on the title of the disc is in order. During the existence of Quest, we lived on the same block as Kirk's grandmother. She was this incredibly cool stereotypical looking old lady from England and we all loved her. A few of us learned how to imitate Kirk's voice so that when she called the house we'd act like Kirk and she never knew she was talking to someone else. The time came when it looked like she was going to lose her house, so Kirk stepped up, bought it and moved in. After a while, his mother, who fell on hard times, also moved in. Then his Uncle Dennis, who also fell on hard times, moved in. Suddenly Kirk finds himself living with his mom, uncle and grandmother and says, the heck with this, keeps the house, keeps giving the three of them a place to live, but goes out and gets his own apartment. That is something I've always found funny and also solidified my respect for Kirk. He took care of his family even though they really imposed on him and that is a great thing. He did, however, own the house, so they used the laundry room, which was a darn big laundry room, for DMZs rehearsal space, and this CD is a nice example of what was to come.
There will be another CD from this band on Doug's page, one that was recorded at Full Sail Recording Studio's live sound class. I'm not sure what Jay Noble's position at Full Sail was then, but today he is their Director of Alumni Relations and Career Development and has been with them for around 20 years. Because of his position at the school, he was able to get them in to record professionally pretty easily. I've never listened to that tape, but I will in the next few weeks. Hopefully you will want to as well and download it.
