So. What's new?

Well sir, there are 2 new CDs on the site, so let me take you through both of them.

Direct link to the DMZ CD and art for "Mini DMZ: Two Nights in Grandma's Laundry Room" is a recording of Doug Knapp and KirkJackson trying out a new drummer with some really fantastic results. It's a single CD with some good sonics and some really great playing.

Link to the Best of Quest discs"The Best of Quest: One Off Improvs and Other Delights" is a simple compilation of some improvisations by Quest that Doug Knapp threw together without much thought and sent to me under the the title 'The Best of Quest'. A double CD with some really good music.

You have reached a pretty unique website. It has no ads. It has no pop ups. It has nothing for sale. What it has is music and art. Well, what it will have is music and art, your's for the taking. There's a little music now and no art, but I'm working on that.

Polaroid of JohnWhat I want this site to be is a great big resource for simply sharing creativity. Lots of us create for the sheer pleasure of creating. For those of us in music, first Fostex mini studios and now home digital recording programs for computers have afforded us the opportunity to create multi-track recordings very inexpensively. For photographers, digital cameras and Photoshop have eliminated the need for processing film and building an expensive darkroom for image manipulation. Painters and sculpturers? Well, they still have to do it the old fashioned way. But they can take digital pictures of their work...

But what do you do with your art once you're done? If you're like most people, you share it with your circle of friends and sit on it until one of them calls you 10 or 15 years later asking for a new copy because they lost theirs. That's a real bummer, because when we do our personal projects, we really get into them and we're proud of them. We'd like other people to hear them, but how are we going to go about that?

Well, the internet, of course.

Everything can be converted to ones and zeros and sent across the world cheaply and easily. So that's what I'm doing with this site. Putting out my creativity and others, cheaply and easily. My reason for doing this is twofold. One, it's a resource I've always wanted for myself. I like going to music sites and hearing what other people have come up with. Pop music bores me and unless you go out actively looking for anything new and interesting, you're not going to discover much. Creativity is not something that gets invested in at the corporate level. Branding and consistency is.

Pop music is pretty much the same across all levels of the spectrum. If I were to transcribe to you the top country, easy listening, R&B, hard rock and heavy metal songs on paper, you wouldn't be able to tell which was which. They all have the same basic song structure (intro / verse / chorus / verse / chorus / instrumental break / verse / chorus) and the same basic chordal structures of I, IV, V. There is precious little imagination there. I'd like to steer away from that on this site.

So as a good way of getting that point across, the first band on this site is Bogus Pomp, a Frank Zappa cover band out of St. Petersburg, Florida that plays some of the most complex music written. In the weeks that follow I'll be adding improvisations by a band named Quest that are quite unique, solo recordings by the late Doug Knapp, stuff from a band named Green Machine out of Minneapolis, photagraphy by Allejandra Pena, painting and sculpture by Mike Thomsen, but that's not enough. If you make interesting music, tape collages, soundscapes, stuff that is unique and interesting, contact me via the email page so we can start a dialog and get your stuff on here are well. My only stipulations is that it be original, not a rehashing of the stuff that can be heard on the radio anyplace else in the country and that there is enough of it to fill a CD, because all of the music offered here is also going to have jewel case art as well. If you're a photographer or sculpture and you'd like a place to showcase your work, this is a good place as well.

We'll make links to your myspace and facebook pages as well, if you have them. Email contacts if you want. Each person or group will have their own page, so your stuff won't get mixed up with everyone elses.

And remember I said the purpose of this site is twofold? I'm also using it as a way to sell myself as a web designer, so if you're one of my potential clients reading this, that means you. If you're looking for a web designer, you can also contact me and we can start a dialog.

Okay! That's it for the opening page! Go on in and start downloading some music and checking out some art. I hope you enjoy it. If you do, send me an email as well, it's nice to know when people enjoy your work.
